Word to LaTeX converter

A free Word to LaTeX converter that runs entirely in your browser with no login required. Upload a .docx file and get a complete LaTeX project back, including equations and images.

The result is a main.tex file with your images neatly stored in a media/ folder. You can copy the code, download the project as a .zip file, or open it directly in our editor to compile a PDF.

How to convert Word to LaTeX

  1. Upload your file: Choose your .docx file above, or drag and drop it into the box. The whole conversion happens in your browser.
  2. Check the summary: Read the summary line below your result. It details exactly what was successfully converted and notes anything that was dropped.
  3. Get your project: Copy the main.tex file, download the project as a .zip, or open it in LaTeX.to to compile the PDF.
  4. Customize your preamble: Replace the generated preamble with the specific document class required by your journal or template. The converter successfully transfers your text and structure, but you control the final look.

Note: This same converter is available inside the main editor under Import Word (.docx), where the project will open in your file tree and compile instantly.

Something not working?

If a .docx does not convert, or the result is wrong, write to us at [email protected] and we will try to fix it. The summary line and, if you can share it, the file itself help us find the cause.

FAQ

Can you convert Word to LaTeX?

Yes. The structure converts well: headings, lists, tables, footnotes, equations, pictures and citations from Zotero fields. The look does not, since fonts, sizes, columns and styles come from the LaTeX document class instead, so expect to edit the preamble after any converter.

How to convert Word to LaTeX online free?

Upload the .docx to the converter at the top of this page. It is free, needs no account and converts in the browser. Download the project as a zip, or open it in LaTeX.to and compile it to a PDF there.

How to convert Word equation to LaTeX?

For one equation, select it in Word, pick LaTeX on the Equation tab, convert it to Linear (Convert, or Ctrl+Shift+=) and copy the text. For a whole document, the converter above turns every Word equation into LaTeX math and reads MathType and Equation Editor objects as math as well.

Can Overleaf convert Word to LaTeX?

Yes. Overleaf imports a .docx through pandoc under New project, then Import, then Word document. Its documentation says the equation conversion can be quite robust, that the result does not match the original margins, font sizes, line spacing or page layout, and that the styling of tables, figures and citations may need editing.

How to convert Word to LaTeX using pandoc?

Install pandoc, then run pandoc -s paper.docx -o paper.tex --extract-media=media in a terminal. The -s flag writes a complete document with a preamble, and --extract-media saves the pictures beside it. Add -f docx+citations for Zotero, Mendeley or EndNote fields and --track-changes=all to keep the tracked changes and comments as marked spans. The converter on this page runs that same pandoc in the browser and adds its own readers for MathType objects (a picture to pandoc) and for Word charts.

Can ChatGPT convert Word to LaTeX?

Yes, for the prose: paste or upload the text and ask for LaTeX. The equations, MathType objects, charts and Zotero fields come back as the assistant's reconstruction, not a conversion, so each needs checking; a converter carries them over as they are. Run the converter first and use an assistant for the cleanup of the preamble and the tables.

How to convert Word template to LaTeX?

A converter carries the text and the structure, never the look, so the template's fonts, margins and headers have to be rebuilt from a LaTeX class. Start from a LaTeX template that matches the document type, convert the Word file for its content, and move the text across.
